The Manganese Greensand requires periodic refreshing with small amount of Potassium Permanganate; see in media supplies. Potassium Permanganate can be purchased at your local home-improvement store also. Auto-backwashing Manganese Greensand Systems greatly enhance the performance of water softeners, when installed before them. Auto-backwashing Manganese Greensand Systems are suitable to treat up to 20ppm of Ferrous Iron from water. These systems refresh themselves periodically using Timer Control Valves installed in them.

The maximum contaminant level for iron set by USEPA standards is 0.3 milligrams per liter (ppm) of water. In concentrations above 0.3 ppm, Iron in water can cause staining of fixtures and porcelain, and ruin laundry. A bittersweet astringent taste is detectable at concentrations above 0.5 ppm by many people. Manganese is often found with iron, and causes brown, black and/or tea-colored staining, and imparts asphaltic and oily tastes, above 0.05 ppm. Like wise Hydrogen Sulfide which is common in water with Manganese causes irritable rotten egg smell, all these three contaminates are effectively removed by Manganese Greensand. Often these systems are used after the water has been pretreated with aeration, chlorine or ozone.

Auto-backwashing Birm Systems work great in well water polluted with Iron. These work less well on Manganese, and cannot be used where the water contains Sulfur odors, Chlorine or low pH. In water with low pH value, pretreatment with Calcite is considered as good option. Auto-backwashing Birm Systems have advantage of backwashing to refresh media with regular water only.
Auto-backwashing Calcite Systems
Auto-backwashing Calcite Systems are recommended as pre treatment units for Iron Filtration Systems, which work well in higher pH or when water is alkaline. These systems neutralize/ raise the pH level thus lowering the acidic nature of your water. The Calcite Systems use inexpensive calcite as the filter media. While raising your pH level, the calcite filter also increases the water hardness level. Auto-backwashing Calcite Systems and Water Softeners work well to provide neutral and soft water. Auto-backwashing Calcite Systems refresh themselves periodically with regular water using Timer Control Valves installed in them.

In water lines, one of the most common cause of corrosion is acidic water. Water that has a pH value of less than 7.0 is considered to be acidic. Signs of acid water are blue staining (from copper pipes) or rust staining (from iron pipes), corrosion of fixtures and leaks in plumbing. Acidic water reacts with calcium minerals, and contain dissolved carbon-dioxide gas which makes carbonic acid. Without treatment, low pH water reacts with copper, lead and other metals from piping, fixtures and appliances, turning good water into contaminated drinking water.
Auto-backwashing Filox Media System with Air Injection (Removes Iron, Manganese and Hydrogen Sulfide)
Auto-backwashing Filox Media Systems with Air Injection work well to treat the Trio of Iron, manganese and Hydrogen Sulfide in water. Filox which is a combination of Calcite and Manganese dioxide balances the pH of feed water and oxidizes the Trio pollutants to precipitates. Air Injection provides a reinforcing effect to Manganese dioxide in oxidation of pollutants, it oxidizes pollutants on it’s own as well. Filox and Air Injection remove iron, Manganese and Hydrogen Sulfide and their turbidity using a combination of oxidation and precipitation techniques.
